googleI came across a great article that talks about a recent update to Google+. Around January 5th, Google+ made a big change that affects marketers that use the social network to advance their SEO. Google+ added NoFollow tags.

Prior to this change, adding a link to a Google+ post was a quick and easy way to get your content indexed in Google. If you had good content, the proper keywords, on page SEO and other factors in place you could be on page one very fast. Now that Google stopped following links that are placed in posts in Google+, this has become a little tricky.

So, what does this all mean? Basically, “link-juice” was being passed from site to site through links from other sources like Google+, and by adding a rel=no follow tag to posts on Google+, Google is able to maintain their PageRank (also known as link juice). Consequently, no authority is now being passed from Google+ to another website.

Overall, this means that Google has chosen to retain their PageRank by moving away from allowing “link juice” to pass through links posted from Google+. Connections between companies and people within their circles is still the most important factor for increasing your search results. Very important…be sure you always use the link feature since Google is still allowing this link to pass authority in each post.

You can read more about this change and how it affects different types of posts and areas of Google+ by reading the full article, Google Moves to Retain Link Juice with NoFollow Tags.
